Las culturas de Internet: la configuración sociotécnica de la red de redes

La gran mayoría de trabajos que estudian la interacción entre Internet y sociedad siguen el tradicional esquema del análisis de impactos y, por tanto, una aproximación fundamentalmente determinista. Bajo este prisma, se trata de identificar las transformaciones, cambios e impactos que el uso de Internet produce en diferentes ámbitos sociales. Son muchos menos, sin embargo, los estudios que se han desarrollado en el sentido inverso, es decir, en el de analizar qué tipo de factores sociales o culturales han configurado, no sólo el uso, sino el diseño mismo de la red de redes. El objetivo de este trabajo es, precisamente, el de explorar cuáles han sido las culturas específicas que han configurado Internet, tal como existe hoy en día, y establecer vínculos entre dichas culturas y algunas de las características estructurales y funcionales básicas de la red. Se analizan las contribuciones provenientes de las comunidades científica y hacker.

Most accounts of the interaction between the Internet and society follow the usual scheme of impact analysis and thus a deterministic point of view. They try to identify the transformations, changes and impacts that the use of the Internet is causing in different social contexts. However, few studies do take the reverse direction: the analysis of social or cultural factors shaping, not only the use, but the very design of the network of networks. The aim of this paper is precisely to explore which particular cultures have shaped the Internet as we know it, and to establish links between them and some of the basic structural and functional features of the network. Contributions coming out of the scientific and the hacker communities are specifically analysed.
